The MLS Comeback Player of the Year Award is determined through votes from MLS players, club technical staffs and media. The Award honours a player who overcame injury or adversity to achieve success in the regular season and Gil did that as he was forced to miss the most of last season as a result of a bone spur injury around his left heel area. He had to undergo surgery to correct the problem. The player returned from the injury earlier than expected for the playoffs last season. Gil captained Revolution to the Supporters Shield with 73 points.
